Fire Protection & Life Safety


		Fire Protection and Life Safety: 8 hours Board Approval #: 06-OM-0203 WT: 0, WW: 0, IN: 0, CO: 0, DS: 0, SU: 0.8 This 8 hour course introduces the student to the recognition of potential fire hazards and emergency procedures. Topics include the chemistry of fire, types and effectiveness of extinguishing agents, means of egress, detection and alarm systems, fire brigades, fire prevention plans, and the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101). 29 CFR 1910, Subparts E and L, and referenced NFPA codes provide the basis for the course. Hands-on training is emphasized as students study and use various types of portable fire protection equipment.
Audience
All employees exposed to hazards resulting from fire, explosion, severe weather or potential terrorist incidents and managers of those employees.

Course Objectives
Upon completion, students will be able to:
• Identify fires by Class • List the basic elements of fire. • Identify the four classes of fire. • Differentiate the materials that make up each class of fire. • Identify fires by their proper Class ID. • Select the correct extinguisher for each Class of fire • Acknowledge that extinguisher type must match fire class. • Locate labels that identify the extinguisher type. • Explain the multi-class markings on some fire extinguishers. • Use proper fire-fighting technique with a fire extinguisher • List the steps to properly use a fire extinguisher. • Explain the need to re-spray a paper, rubbish or trash fire. • Describe the procedure for extinguishing flammable liquids. • Explain why carbon dioxide or halon extinguishers are used. • Recall the need to keep extinguishers 50-75 feet of all work areas. • Recognize areas that require a fire extinguisher. • Inspect extinguishers properly • List items to inspect on the extinguisher. • Agree to treat an extinguisher with any used part as empty. • Cite conditions and situations when a supervisor must be notified. • Respond properly if a fire occurs • Describe when it is safe to attempt to put out a fire yourself. • Recall procedures to follow after a fire is put out. • How to ensure proper operation of fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems through a program of inspection, testing, and maintenance • Provide portable fire extinguishers according to established criteria for type, placement, inspection, maintenance, and use • How to ensure that acquisitions such as curtains, furniture, waste baskets, bedding, and other equipment meet established fire safety criteria • How to investigate and recommend actions to correct deficiencies, failures, and user errors • How to provide fire safety orientation for new employees and annual refreshers thereafter • How to provide for emergency response addressing facility-wide needs, area-specific needs, fire evacuation routes, and the specific roles and responsibilities of personnel at the fire, at areas away from the fire, and during evacuation. • How to collect information regarding staff knowledge and skill, staff and equipment response during fire emergencies, and facility code compliance to identify and correct deficiencies. • How to respond to terrorist/WMD incidents at your facility
