Description

This 40 hour course is designed for workers exposed to hazardous substances and who are required to attend 40 hours of safety training per 29 CFR 1910.120 and 29 CFR 1926.65. This course reviews safety and health considerations, work procedures, personal protective equipment and clothing, site monitoring, emergency and incident response techniques, decontamination and planning.

Any employee who is exposed to hazardous substances on a work site and their management.

Course Objectives

BASIC CHEMISTRY: 2 hours

An intense introduction to the nature and behavior of inorganic and organic chemical. This course examines various laws of chemistry as they apply to organic compounds, flammable liquids and gases, and other types of hazardous materials

APPLIED CHEMISTRY: 2 hours

Provides the technical foundation for specific operational strategies field and detection devices with an emphasis placed on the safety associated with working around chemicals

INCIDENT CONSIDERATIONS: 4 hours

A study of the legal, organizational, technical, and practical aspects of response to hazardous materials emergencies including the laws and regulations related to hazardous materials, the use of the Incident Command System, and protective actions, clothing, and equipment

HAZARD AND RISK ASSESSMENT: 4 hours

Hands-on training in tactical field operations with various tools and specialized equipment involving the collection of evidence, containment methods, and techniques. Methods for identifying hazardous materials transported by rail car and highway motor vehicles are examined as well as clandestine drug labs, pipelines, and fixed facilities.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNICIAN CONSIDERATIONS: 4 hours

Designed for individuals involved in daily activities at a fixed facility with hazardous materials and/or waste as defined under OSHA standards Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations Section 1910.120.  This section examines hazard identification and assessment, protective action options, the role and appropriate response of personnel, health and safety issues, the Incident Command System, and decontamination.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT USE: 8 hours

Practical “hands-on” use of chemical protective clothing, SCBA and full-face respirators are performed in both a controlled classroom environment and actual field scenario. Selection and use of appropriate PPE for a HazMat event is reviewed.

CHEMICAL-SPECIFIC TRAINING: 8 hours

Day four is dedicated to the study of specific chemicals, including: chlorine, ammonia, caustic soda, flammable liquids, nitric and sulfuric acids. Analysis of Process Safety Management and Risk Management Program compliance, system configurations and specific response measures are addressed.

INCIDENT COMMAND: 8 hours

Classroom and practical exercise in all aspects of the incident command system (ICS)/incident management system (IMS) as it applies to hazardous materials incidents. Topics such as command and control, logistical support, site safety, public information dissemination, unified command and communication is reviewed.
